01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A bowl filled with such deeply dark broth might easily suggest aggressive saltiness, but the signature shoyu ramen at Mentaiken delivers a surprisingly clean, crisp finish that belies its appearance while keeping the aroma and sharpness of soy sauce intact. Straight, medium-thin noodles catch plenty of thinly sliced chashu pork and green scallions with every lift of the chopsticks.

Just as sought-after as the dark soy broth is the shop's ginger ramen, infused with a distinct kick of fresh ginger. The invigorating aroma melds with the savoury depth of the dashi broth for a warming, comforting bowl. Diners in search of bolder heat can also turn to the spicy ginger ramen or the mala ramen.

Many diners pair their noodles with yakimeshi, wok-fried with deep, aromatic seasoning. Rounding out a bowl of ramen with a half-size yakimeshi, pan-fried gyoza, or a beer makes for an equally satisfying midday meal or an easygoing dinner.

Located between Omiya and Karasuma stations, the shop provides counter seating alongside tables, making it welcoming for solo diners. With continuous service running from lunch through dinner, plus takeout and delivery available, it easily accommodates a break while exploring Kyoto or a casual everyday bite.
